There Will Always Be An England II
A week or so ago I read a news report on the decline in the common sparrow population in the UK. It seems that back gardens no longer offer a source of food for the sparrow, the insects on which the sparrow feeds are not present in sufficient numbers. It has been suggested that people let their garden grow a little 'wild'. The fact that many people insist on paving over front gardens and large areas of the back garden has lead to the destruction of the insect's natural habitat. Garden decking also has a very negative effect. Garden decking is particularly awful because of it's connection to the Summer Barbecue. Every year it is the same, you go outdoors to be greeted by the smell of mentholated spirits mingled with the delicate aroma of burnt sausages or beef burgers. This is accompanied by loud and irritating voices, plus music. Why can't people simply enjoy a few sandwiches and a pot of tea out in the garden on a summer's evening? What happened to the traditional picnic?
